Fishing outside the courtyard door. Nearly every day one can see boats fishing
in the open. The reason why fishermen choose this place to fish is the small
ravine near the waves. Additionally one can fish on his/her own, 200 meters
further, on the outfall of the ravine or on the port's rocks or any other place
along the shore.
Hiking in a natural environment with appealing range of choices. The olive groves
are cut off by ravines with rich wild vegetation. A very common route is by the
sea till a discontiguous tavern and after that to Eftalou and Mythimna. Another
pleasant walk is towards the village of Sikaminea and even further to the top
where one can enjoy the magical view.
Short sallies to the listed village of Sikaminea for a glass of ouzo and some
appetizers in one of the two coffee houses of the square. A visit to Mythimna
(Molivos) is vital as it is a very beautiful and very picturesque small historic
town with its castle and the vibrant tourist life during peak seasons. After Mythimna,
one should visit Petra. Alternatively on the other side of the island one can
see the villages of Kapi and Aghia Paraskevi, which are picturesque, unique and
do not attract many tourists. There, one can see archaeological sites and finds,
churches and monasteries. The same stands for the village of Mandamados in which
one can visit the monastery of Taxiarchis and taste some of the very famous dairy
products.
For longer sallies one can go to Mytilene, which is bustled with life and has
a big market, museums and remarkable buildings, Sigri for a visit to the museum
and the petrified forest, the picturesque village of Plomari, the birthplace of
Sappho Eressos and many more that this very big and interesting island has to
offer.
Another alternative and equally interesting choice is a short excursion by boat,
which takes one from Mythimna to Skala Sikamineas.
During the summer there are many special events organized. Many famous artists
are invited in the castle of Mythimna, whereas in the port of Skala Sikamineas
there is always a razzle taking place.
For food there is first and foremost the famous port of Skala Sikamineas with
its four taverns and fresh fish. Further on there are the taverns in Kaya Beach
as well as in the village of Sikamineas where one can taste traditional local
delicacies. In Mythimna one can eat in a very busy environment and for a longer
night out enjoy Mythimna's night life till the small hours.
Development of bird watching. You will very often come across - even outside your
window - the local rare "Persian Squirrel" (sciurus anomalus), which
the locals call "galia".
